Informal Cadastral Data - Pilot Project

The informal rural settlements of the HELP database have been mapped using GPS and heads-up digitizing from orthophoto's. These are approximately 1402 villages with 854,769 erven (land parcels) in the provinces indicated in the table below.

Province Village_Boundary Erven
Mpumalanga 84 126 481
Freestate 120 109 706
Northwest 198 248 582
Eastern Cape 500 170 000
(approximate)
Northern Province 500 200 000
(approximate)

It is the intention of the Surveyor-General to display this informal data on the web with the formal cadastre. To this end, there is currently a pilot project being undertaken.

The pilot project is concentrating on Qwa-Qwa. The first phase of the pilot is to import the spatial data into Oracle Spatial (8i) and import the attribute data into Oracle 8i.

When the pilot project is declared complete, the entire informal cadastral dataset will be imported into Oracle Spatial (8i) and displayed on the world wide web.

Copyright of this dataset, captured during the Housing and Electrification Program (HELP) of ESKOM, resides with Geospace.
